Common Sense

Personal Misconduct

Common-Sense-

In less than a two-week period (10.04.13 post), another flag-officer has been relieved of duty….bluntly put – fired.

http://www.airforcetimes.com/article/20131011/CAREERS03/310110016/2-star-charge-ICBMs-fired

In the case of this Major General, it was personal misconduct or really lack of common sense. The misconduct occurred while the general was on TDY (temporary duty away from base) not at 20th Air Force Headquarters….yet that doesn’t make any difference. Whether on TDY or on-base….common sense prevails for anyone….a 1st Lt. or a Maj.General. Nothing less than high standards should apply.

The real issue is that perhaps no one spoke up when the misconduct took place. Generals have a great deal of latitude and influence….junior officers are reluctant to say anything….a Lt.Col or Col. could and should step aside and speak out.

This Maj. General is reassigned and likely will be asked to retire….sadly embarrassing himself….family….and the Air Force.

Senior leaders must do the right thing….it only takes common sense.

Honey Crisp & SweeTango

Fresh Market

On a recent visit to The Fresh Market….a high-end grocery store. I was drawn to the produce section and the premium apples…HoenyCrisp and SweeTango. These were giant apples….selling for $2.99 per pound.

What drew my attention was the way they were neatly displayed….row upon row…..almost to a flat top pyramid….a terrfic merchandising strategy. While the price is higher than the more traditional apple….the HoneyCrisp and SweeTango are worth the price.

The Fresh Market takes their produce seriously and merchandising (display) makes a significant difference….it’s a solid marketing strategy. It was impossible to resist not buying one (SweeTango) of these excellent and fresh apples.

Coffee

The Humble Cup

Humble cup

I often post on coffee….it’s a fascinating subject.

From the LATimes; http://www.latimes.com/food/dailydish/la-dd-national-coffee-day-humble-cup-20130929,0,1490039.story

A very clever idea:

  • Instant pour-over of fresh roasted coffee
  • Highly portable-a small packet
  • Local product-made in Los Angeles
  • Good Coffee-from local roasters
  • Great design-it’s simple….just add hot water

Humble Cup is available in local coffee shops such as Cafe Dulce and Barista Society in Los Angeles and Taza Coffee in Arcadia….this seems like a great opportunity to expand the concept beyond LA.

Carolina Classic Catfish

Carolina Classic Catfish

On a recent Flavor NC (UNCTV)….Carolina Classic Catfish was the featured story. I have never tried catfish….after watching the program….perhaps I should give it a try.

Flavor NC highlights a food category/business and then shows how the product is used.

Carolina Classic Catfish is completely self-contained from the catfish fry to maturing in ponds like the photo above. They produce their own food to ensure a quality product.

An unique business in eastern North Carolina.

Leadership

Honor/Ethics Failure

Failure

This was a disturbing news story:

http://www.airforcetimes.com/article/20130928/NEWS/309280008/Vice-admiral-suspended-amid-gambling-investigation

“The No. 2 officer at the military command in charge of all U.S. nuclear war-fighting forces is suspected in a case involving counterfeit gambling chips at a western Iowa casino and has been suspended from his duties, officials said.”

“As a career submarine officer, Giardina has served on both fast attack and ballistic missile submarines in both the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets including command of USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) (Gold), and duty in USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 709) as executive officer. He commanded Submarine Squadron 17 in Bangor, Wash. , which included 10 Trident submarines, from July 2001 to July 2003.”

“He most recently served as Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, United States Pacific Fleet. His most recent command assignment was as commander, Submarine Group Trident, Submarine Group Nine, and Submarine Group 10 where he was responsible for all 18 U.S. Trident Submarines.

Vice-admiral is a three star or Lt. General rank….and being responsible for all 18 Trident Submarines is a very significant position in the Navy. The question is why one would ever put themselves in a position that questions their honor/ethics.

The main issue in the Vice-Admirals suspension is counterfeit gambling chips….probably not a major infraction….yet never-the-less an infraction and not one a Vice-Admiral/Lt. General should ever be associated with.

Cetianly an ethics failure and even more so common sense. The Vice-Admiral needs to be relieved and retired,
